You know those people who wake up early, feeling refreshed and ready to take over the world? Yeah, so do we. They smile, they laugh, they joyfully greet the neighbors even though it’s only 7 AM, and by the time you manage to crawl out of bed, they’ve already done 30% of their goals for the day. For most of us, they’re a complete mystery, but usually, they just like to say they’re a “morning person”.
There’s been some research floating around the internet that suggests no one is truly a morning person, but since everyone is unique, we think there are definitely those who prefer the early morning rise rather than a late-start on the day. The thing is, it probably didn’t come naturally. They got into the habit of it and trained their body to automatically wake up early but feel refreshed. In fact, some people even feel worse if they oversleep than they would if they got up at their usual early time. It’s a habit you can also build if you decide it’s time to improve on your usual routines.
We prepared some easy tips to get you started:
Go to sleep early
Sometimes, it can be a rabbit hole of scrolling through Instagram, binge-watching your favorite show, or stalking your 7th-grade crush that recently got married on Facebook — and then you realize it’s 2 am and you should have been asleep hours ago. Once your body is used to falling asleep later, it can be a hard habit to break. Try turning your brain off, going to bed earlier than usual… and ditch the technology that distracts you. If you have trouble falling asleep earlier, there are some teas that can induce sleepiness so you could give them a try for the first few days. The human body is extraordinary, and we promise you’ll get the need to sleep much earlier after a week of effort. If you go to sleep early, you’ll have fewer problems waking up in the morning and feel more refreshed when you do. As they say, seize the day!
Do not snooze!
Yes, we know, the feeling of freedom you get from repeatedly hitting the snooze button is amazing, but you know what’s even more amazing? All the extra time you’ll have for YOURSELF if you get up right away. More time to enjoy your coffee. More time to put on makeup. More time to change your mind about what you’re going to wear. Time is money, so every time you snooze, it’s money you lose. Some believe there’s such a thing as a 5 Second Rule that means if you don’t start something you want within 5 seconds of thinking of it, there’s a big chance you won’t do it at all. In that sense, the same would apply to over-sleeping and hitting the snooze button. If you don’t force yourself to get up within 5 seconds of hearing the alarm, you’ll have a much harder time getting out of bed later because your brain will give up on the idea.
Eat your breakfast!
Unfortunately, having just a cup of coffee doesn’t exactly count as breakfast. If you want to start your morning right, you need to eat right. After sleeping all night, our metabolism and blood sugar are at their lowest and we need a healthy breakfast to re-energize us. If you’re extremely tired in the morning, make sure you’re not just hungry. We’re big supporters of starting the day with a healthy breakfast, and we’re sure you’d be too once the benefits of a healthy breakfast routine start kicking! Make sure to check out our articles on tricks that help you lose weight through eating breakfast, and if you’re feeling determined, try our 5-day breakfast challenge.
Do some exercise
Sure, you can go to the gym after work, but what if you went BEFORE work? That would mean an afternoon off – imagine all the fun things you could do with it. A massage. A hair-dresser appointment. An afternoon with your kids. Not to mention you’ll energize your body for the rest of the day, and instantly have the gratification of knowing you did something good for yourself from the very start of your day.
Start with meditation (or a yoga session!)
A really good way to start your morning with some positivity is trying out some meditation exercises! Maybe you’re skeptical about meditation, or you’re someone who believes they just can’t clear their mind enough to get any benefits — so why even try. Mornings are perfect for an early meditation because your brain hasn’t started fully bombarding you with thoughts and worries about the new day. Starting your day with a feeling of serenity will make it easier to endure whatever life might throw at you. Make sure you try out some of the meditation exercises you can find in the Bellabeat app and don’t forget you can track your progress by using your Leaf! In case you really aren’t feeling the whole meditation thing, that’s okay! Why not give some early yoga a try? 5 minutes is all you need!
....just DO it!
You can’t have a good morning routine if you end up waking up at the last minute and are always rushing around. The worst thing you can do once you’ve dismissed your alarm clock is think about the pros and cons of getting up. If you start thinking, you’ll fall back to sleep and that’s no good. Getting out of bed is like removing a band-aid – it’s best if it’s done quickly. Jump out of bed, go brush your teeth and you’ll be fine. The more you do it, the more of a habit it will become — and so will the rest of the suggestions we shared with you! It’s all a matter of doing something repeatedly until it becomes a habit. Once it’s a habit, you won’t even have to think twice about doing it, it will just be automatic.
Naturally, if you work night shifts you won’t exactly be able to try any of these tips, but we hope you can still find some things to apply to make your daily life a just a bit healthier.
We hope these quick tips help you establish a good morning routine! Let us know if you have any of your own suggestions or tips on how to make mornings an amazing start of every day.
