3 Reasons to Have Sex on Your Period

Period sex is still one of society’s biggest taboos and even though 50% of the planet menstruates, it’s still considered unclean, dirty and is even associated with prostitution in some areas of the world. It’s no secret that your hormones are raging during your period - from mood swings, bloating and cravings, so why not try to enjoy it? As there’s no medical reason to avoid period sex, there’s no fear of it doing any harm (except to your towel, maybe). And while some say it’s a hard NO for them, others are more opened for this experience, which does make sense when we look at some of our body’s responses to it.

According to a survey conducted by Bodyform UK “half of (participating) adults would ‘never’ have period sex. However, 21 percent of adults say the idea of it doesn’t bother them at all and interestingly, 39 percent of women have days during their period where they would be more inclined to have sex”. Having this in mind doesn’t it make sense to at least try to benefit from it?

We’ve prepared 3 amazing, science-based reasons why you should try having sex on your period!

1. Get rid of your migraines

Together with the flow and bloating, migraines are one of the most common symptoms many women experience during their period. And if you’ve ever had it, you know how difficult it can be at times. Well, according to a study published in the journal of the International Headache Society, having sex may help!

60% of the respondents reported an improvement of their symptoms with more than 70% experiencing mild to moderate relief when practicing sex during a migraine. When it comes to cluster headaches, 37% reported an improvement, mostly moderate to full.

To conclude, sexual activity can lead to partial or complete relief of headache in some migraine and a few cluster headache patients.

2. Relieve cramps

While scientists are still not sure of the reasons behind it, having sex and reaching orgasm can help relieve period pain and shorten the length of your period. Since orgasms are basically contractions of your uterus, it helps remove the tissue faster, shortening the length of your period. Additionally, having an orgasm signals our brain to start producing a hormone called oxytocin, responsible for the feeling of relaxation and reduce the perception of pain.

3. Bond with your partner

As sex in itself can be an intimate act, period sex can be even more meaningful (or just horny). With all this taboo surrounding it, sometimes it requires partners to discuss it beforehand, advancing their communication skills and helping them bond even more. Whether you do it without any issue or you decided to talk it out with your partner first - sex is always a good thing to bond over.

Although there are many other reasons we can present you with, it’s best you try it for yourself. Trust us - it’s bloody good!
